Introduction

Respect and tolerance lie at the heart of our college values and Career Ready Standards.  This is reflected in the way that we treat each other and the respect that we show for our colleagues, fellow learners and also for college property. 

We shared concerns with you at the recent Centre Course Reps meeting about the abuse of toilet facilities at the College.  The levels of damage is costly and demonstrates a worrying lack of respect from a very small minority of learners towards college premises.  LDCs and tutors are reinforcing this message in tutorials and making learners aware of the consequences if they are found to be responsible, we would ask that you please report any concerning behaviour to your LDC, tutor or security staff.

A reminder that whether it is in the College or in our local community it is important to mirror high standards of behaviour to encourage a relationship of mutual respect and ensure we are all reflecting ourselves in the best possible light.

LDCs

This week the LDCs are delivering sessions on interview technique. They will discuss what to do to prepare for an interview as well as looking at model answers for typical interview questions. In addition, they will get to practice in groups, using the STAR model (Situation, Task, Actions, Result) to answer questions themselves. This will prepare learners for an exciting interview day event happening on Monday 12^th December whereby a selection of learners from across the college will have the chance to take part in a mock interview with a member of staff.
 

Student Union

This week, the Student’s Union are finalising their plans for a Christmas celebration to coincide with our first debating event, SW4 Banter. There will be music and goodies and a chance for learners and staff to have their photo taken with Santa Claus, as well as a Lambeth College wish box allowing learners to make a College Christmas Wish. The SU will be collecting money for a local homelessness charity, Ace of Clubs throughout the day.

Smoking Cessation

As of January 2017, the college will become a complete NO SMOKING premises. 

Lambeth Stop Smoking Service will be here to signpost smokers to local support services, provide leaflets, national booklets, freebies, (incl. stress balls, trolley tags, pens) and visual aids. They will be located on The Street SW4 on the following dates:

• Wednesday 4^th January 2017 (12.00 – 3.00)
• Wednesday 7^th December (12.00 – 3.00)
• Tuesday 13^th December (11.00 – 2.00)

Personal Statement Surgeries

Interview Day Experience - Monday 12th December

 
Learner Development Coaches (LDC) have partnered up with Career Development & Progression Team to deliver the Interview Day Experience.

The aim of the event is to give learners an opportunity to take part in a realistic experience of a university or a job interview. Students will be able to practice speaking about their strengths and weaknesses, their up-to-date experience as well as interests and hobbies.

For the interviewing panel we have invited a number of external guests from various professional sectors and universities to make the experience as realistic as possible. The interviews will take place at the Clapham Centre on Monday 12^th December 2016, starting at 10am. If you are interested in practising your interviewing skills please contact your LDC.

Sports Enrichment: Disability Sports
 
On Tuesday 29th of November, the College Sports Maker and the Sports Disability Coach Maddy started running an exciting, fun and multiple sports activities for the Colleges Supported Learning groups, these sessions take place every Tuesday between 2:00pm to 3:30pm in the college's Sports Hall. Activities are motivational, inspiring and engaging and allows all learners to participate and try multiple sports which include: football rounders, football, basketball, netball, volleyball and other team games. Learners at Lambeth College begin their journey to career success!

On Thursday 8 December, 25 level 3 learners from different subject areas will travel to London to kick start their Career Ready programme, and enjoy a behind-the-scenes visit to IP Group and Costain. The event, called A Capital Experience, is organised in partnership with Career Ready, a UK wide charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open up the world of work to young people.
In the morning the students will join 1,500 other young people from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, all of whom are beginning the Career Ready programme. Students will hear from motivational speaker Action Jackson, as well as Career Ready alumni who have achieved career success. In the afternoon students will visit two companies and will be given the opportunity to practice their networking skills with employers and the wider Career Ready student community.

Employability Town Workshop
 
75 learners from Arts and Media, IT and Business will be taking part in a workshop in the Hub on 13^th December when Employability Town will be returning to run a session on “Is your CV Juicy Enough.” This will be a very worthwhile workshop with many learners reaping the benefits of the session in terms of employability skills. Klaudia from Employability Town will be back again in the new year to run the rest of the series of workshops culminating in May with a workshop looking at next steps for learners.
