Introduction

Welcome back, I hope you all had a restful half-term break.  The final countdown continues and you are now almost at the finishing line.  This last part of your course is about completion and achievement.  We are ambitious for you and want you to meet your Career Ready Standard stretch and challenge grade.  Attend all your lessons and exams, work with your LDC, tutor and teachers to ensure you complete your work and progress on to the next level of your course at the college, your dream job and career or on the University in 2017/18.

It is important to remain focused and committed this month.  We are here to support, visit the ILT Centre and Library, where staff are available to help you with assignments. If you are experiencing hardship or other barriers that are affecting your chances of completing your studies, please speak to your Learner Development Coach or Course Tutor.  We will work alongside you to remove these obstacles and make sure you complete your studies with the best outcome.

Learner Development Coach Update

Exams - with exams in full swing, LDCs will be looking at exam tips and revision technique. Learners will discuss their best strategies for revision and will look at ways to maximise performance in exams. This will include things like getting putting together a revision timetable, getting a good night’s sleep and eating a proper breakfast.

Chuka Umunna, MP for Streatham was due to visit the College today, Monday 5th June, however, due to the tragic incident in London Bridge on Saturday he has had to cancel.  Chuka is a keen supporter of the college and a regular visitor and his office have confirmed that he will reschedule.

The Tutorial is a safe place for learners to discuss any concerns they have regarding this and other recent incidents. LDCs are available to have supportive conversations with learners who may be upset or anxious about these events.

Democracy and the General Election - reminder to learners to also vote in the General Election which is taking place this Thursday 8th June 2017  Remember, your vote is your VOICE!

GCSE English and Maths Exams

GCSE English and Maths exams are taking place this week on Tuesday 6th and Thursday 8th June, Learner Development will be giving learners taking these exams free bottles of water in reception from 8.30am each morning.

Student Union Update

The voting in the SU Election is now closed and votes will be counted this week.  There were a range of excellent candidates for these important roles for this coming year and they were on The Street promoting themselves daily throughout the voting period.  There has been high voting participation and excitement around the election and we look forward to announcing the winners at the start of next week.

The summer recruitment campaign started this weekend focusing on GCSE students and Open Events.  Currently the campaign has a digital focus, on web and mobile platforms, and directs people to the new Lambeth College web site.

In July, there will be new creative on outdoor media positioned around Lambeth and Southwark to support the digital elements.    The creative was tested in a focus group where Learner’s preferred ‘Step Forward’ as a creative route to market.     This will be support by student stories about progression and the aspirational value of learning and building career ready standards.

Thank you to the Learners that took part in the focus group.  The new creative will be out in July.

Work Experience REMINDER – ALL 16 – 19 STUDY PROGRAMME Learners

Although we have had a majority of learners who have been successfully completing their work experience as part of their Study Programme, unfortunately we have had a small minority of people who have refused or forgot to turn up to employers for their allocated placement. Please note that if you are 16 – 19 and on the Study Programme, the work experience placement is COMPLUSORY, non-attendance is not an option!

Any non-attendance will be followed up by Careers, tutors and Heads of School and failure to turn up to two placements will result in a disciplinary hearing which could result in non-progression to the next level of your course. We work hard as a College to build relationships with employers and this is damaged if learners do not attend – it also stops other learners from gaining the opportunity if employers decide not to work with us as a result of non-attendance.

On a positive, numerous learners have had fantastic experiences on their work experience placements and they have been able to add this to their CV’s and some have even got paid work from it! If you would like to find out more or have any questions or queries please contact Ben Powell, Career Development and Progression Manager on bpowell@lambethcollege.ac.uk

Work experience success for Health and Social Care learner!

Laura Perez Pas who studies Level 3 Health and Social Care has successfully completed her mandatory work experience placement with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.

Her placement started in January 2017 and within a short period of time it was obvious she has a genuine passion for this type of work which has resulted in her receiving a glowing reference from her supervisor Judith who is a Paediatric Asthma Nurse. Judith gave the following statement, “Laura is passionate to excel in what she does and has clear goals within her that she seeks to fulfil. This gives her a tenacity and perseverance, even in difficult circumstances, and she has an admirable work ethic. She presents herself politely and respectfully and always communicates changes and information needed. She makes the most of every day and every experience, for which she is grateful“.

Laura’s commitment to her work experience placement has given her transferable skills, a credible addition to her CV and also exposed her to a valuable networking opportunity for the future. The Careers Department would like to congratulate Laura for giving 100% to her work experience placement and we wish her all the success for the future.
