Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory (CBT-L5)


About the course:

This qualification is intended for candidates who want to develop CBT skills and theory as an integral part of their counselling work.

This is a vocational qualification combining workplace learning and academic study, designed to meet the requirements of employers in providing CBT.
Practitioners will develop proficiency as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist at a placement agency or workplace, under clinical supervision.

Course content:

You must be in an appropriate setting that would support you working with at least 3 clients (aged 16 or over) using the CBT model, under clinical supervision.
Supervision requirements: The course includes group training supervision in addition to the candidate’s own supervision arrangements for their external work as per BACP/BABCP minimum requirements.

The course consists of Theory Seminars with experiential work, skills practice and a case study presentation.

Assessment by way of a Candidate Portfolio including, Reflective Learning Reviews, Case presentation and externally assessed Case Review (3,000 –3,500 words).

After this course:

Successful candidates may progress onto further training in counselling, psychotherapy and counselling supervision (provided they have acquired at least one year (part-time) of post CBT-L5 supervised clinical experience).
The Open University provides further training routes with credits for CPCAB qualifications at Levels 4 and 5.


Course name: Certificate in Counselling Skills CPCAB

This course provides the opportunity to develop Counselling Skills and understanding of theory for skilled helping work at an intermediate level.

Course content:  Counselling theory and skills practice; weekly learning reviews and summaries; essay; external assessment.

After this course: To Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies CPCAB or employment.

Entry requirements:

Completion of an introductory course in counselling (30 hours) or relevant occupational experience

Subject to tutor reference and interview.

To have sufficient life experience and be personally ready to work with own self-awareness in relation to others.
