Introduction

Welcome back, I hope you all had a good half-term break and have returned feeling refreshed and focused.

The first six weeks of your course was an induction and probation period which you have successfully passed and you will now have a very clear idea what the expectations of the Career Ready Standards are around behaviour, commitment and progress.  In particular, you will know attendance is central to your success and we expect every learner to have a 100% attendance and to arrive to each lesson on time.

In this newsletter you will learn about some of the many exciting employability and work experience opportunities on offer, such as at the British Film Institute, Lloyds Bank, Front of House Festival in Hyde Park and our own College Sports Activators and more, all of which you can get involved in this term to help build your skills and experience.  We have also developed strong links with local employers who want to recruit learners who are punctual, reliable, have a positive attitude, good English and Maths skills and are fully committed.  It is important that you are mirroring these Career Ready Standards in and around  the college, as we can then recommend you for these opportunities. 

A reminder to our 16-18 learners that this term’s Parent/Guardians’ Consultation Evening will take place this coming Monday 7^th November, 6pm to 7.30pm.  We look forward to seeing the families and guardians of our young learners at this event.

LDC Update 

In this week’s Tutorial, all groups will be asked to carry out the college SPOC. Your LDC will ask you to answer a series of questions relating to your college experience. This is an opportunity to reflect on all the positive activities you have engaged in so far this academic year, from Induction week to Progress review week and will allow you the opportunity to give feedback.
 

Progress Review Week

Progress Review Week saw a range of activities relating to the personal and social development of learners taking place across the college.  On Monday 140 learners from tutorial and course groups attended  Prevent Radicalisation workshops delivered by the FE Prevent Regional Co-ordinator.

In addition, in tutorials LDCs and tutors looked at Prevent radicalisation and what British values mean to them. The sessions allowed the opportunity to explore why people may become vulnerable to radicalisation, how the government works to support those at risk of radicalisation and how to keep yourself and others safe. The session saw some excellent discussions take place and allowed a safe space to ask questions.

Tuesday saw approximately 200 learners  attend workshops delivered by Trident Police which explored the issue of gang crime and gun and knife crime, this workshop looked at the risks and dangers of being involved with gang related activity and educated learners on how to stay safe and who to report concerns to.

DBS Drop-in Sessions
 
DBS applications are available in the Silent Study Room, The Library, this week and next week daily from 11:00 – 13:15.  However, from 31st October onwards, DBS will be available in Room S012 between 11:00 and 13:15.  Please remember to bring ID and 2 official documents showing proof of your current address.
 

Learners visit Front of House Festival in Hyde Park
 
On Thursday 20th October, a number of Level 2 learners took part in the Front of House Festival in Hyde Park – they saw the National Waiters Race and looked at various trade stands and speakers talking about how to get into the Hospitality and Catering industry. The Careers team are planning more trips and visits in industry related fields so watch this space!

Learners Start Work Experience

After the British Film Institute came in and presented their The Film Crew work experience, learners from Hair and beauty, Electrical installation, media and business started their work experience in Manchester and London.

The learners were paired up with mentors such as costume designers, casting agents, gaffers and production managers. Learning objectives were given to learners to ensure their time spent with the industry experts was measurable and worthwhile. As well as shadowing their mentor they also had practical tasks to engage in which will translate into transferable career skills and be a great example on a CV.

Lloyds Bank Come to Lambeth College
 
On Thursday 20th October about 40 level 2 and level 3 Business learners took part in a Finance Day arranged through the Careers Team and Employee Volunteering. Learners looked at the financial world that we live in, living independently and reaching your goals and money matters. Learners found the session useful and informative and Lloyds Bank are planning to come back and deliver more sessions in the near future. Learn About Uni on a Taster Course
 
Taster courses are provided by some universities and colleges to let you experience academic and social life on campus, before applying for a place.
 
Taster courses vary in length; some are one-day courses only, whereas others are held over a weekend, or sometimes over a whole week.

What are the benefits of attending a taster course?

• You are more likely to choose a course and university to suit your interests and abilities.
• You can highlight your attendance in your personal statement on your UCAS application.
• Or you may decide the course or campus is not the one for you, and decide not to apply there.

• The School of  Computing and Engineering Taster Day will be held on Wednesday 9th November 2016 at University of West London (Ealing site).

• Arts and Creative Industries Experience Day on Wed 9th  November 2016 London South Bank University

Stage Business
 
This week we had Richard Knowles from Stage Business come in and talk to our students about their exciting project. Stage Business are looking for 30 students to take part in their leadership project where students learn important skills in team work, leadership and entrepreneurship. With exciting workshops, theatre trips and personal development, the stage business project is perfect for budding entrepreneurs or just someone wanting to gain more confidence.

Employability Town

This week Yolanda from Employability Town delivered a talk on how to perfect your time management skills. In a competitive job market where employers are looking for transferable skills, time management is now a sought after quality. Yolanda gave a very informative and engaging talk on how best to manage your work load studying and whilst at work.

Course Reps

On Wednesday 19th October, College Course Reps attended their training session in order to be able to carry out their roles effectively.  They covered how to give feedback effectively, British values in relation to democracy and freedom of speech.  They also looked at two different roles available, one for IT Skills and one supporting other learners with Study Skills.  As well as feeding back on learner views these two roles will help Course Reps to support their fellow learners on their courses.
